WorldNomads.com Announces Travel Photography Scholarship Winner
Littleton, CO - Today WorldNomads.com announced that Anna Zhu has won the travel photography scholarship, she will go on assignment with renowned Nat Geo photographer Jason Edwards. Anna will photograph the world's most remote wilderness aboard Gap Adventure's Antarctica Classic M/S Expedition, exploring the South Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula.
There were 1,050 applicants and 31 finalists made it to Jason Edwards for his final selection. After many grueling hours of painstaking assessment Jason decided on Anna as the winner.
“Anna’s portfolio was simple yet beautifully composed there were no weak images that I would have removed, no chinks in the armour so to speak. I thoroughly enjoyed viewing her portfolio and it illustrates that great stories are often just around the corner. Her captioning was concise, informative and moving,” comments Jason. “Sometimes a caption requires extensive detail and other times not, here I had all that was required to explain what was occurring in the frames. Likewise, Anna’s written component gave me an idea of who she was, what her intentions were with her photography, and what she hoped to gain from the experience.”
Anna graduated with a degree in Visual Communications in May 2009, and is currently working as a freelance graphics designer as well as a casual photographic assistant to Sydney-based photographer Mark Rogers. She also volunteers weekly for Oxfam Australia as an art director and photographer.
“I want to dedicate my life to documenting the small-scale narrative, the story and struggle of individuals or small communities, and how they may fit within a larger social concern,” comments Anna. “I aim to produce photo essays that are intimate yet strong in narrative, and that gives voice to those previously overlooked.”
